PIP reform passes in Florida; will it be effective?

March 12th, 2012

Gov. Rick Scott got the legislation he wanted to reform Florida’s mandatory motor vehicle no-fault law and crack down on the abuses in personal injury protection cases that has led to skyrocketing increases for coverage. Whether the new measure will be effective remains to be seen.

The measure passed on a 22-17 vote in the Senate after some heavy duty lobbying by Scott and others on Friday before lawmakers adjourned at the stroke of midnight.

“I think it’ll make a big difference in cutting down on fraud,” Sen. Joe Negron said Saturday. Read more…

Landlords urged to follow ‘golden rules’

March 2nd, 2012

New landlords have been encouraged to follow the “golden rules” of letting out a property if they do not want to be left with a poor asset filled with bad tenants.

LettingFocus.com said that landlords should be “very careful” when it comes to choosing the right tenants for their property, before advising thorough reference checks.

David Lawrenson, private rented sector expert at the organisation, noted that people looking to become a landlord should consider where they are buying a property that they intend to rent.

“The key thing is choosing an area and choosing a type of property – particularly look out for any areas of oversupply,” he said.

Mr Lawrenson explained that landlords should pick an area which offers a strong economy and where there is a very strong demand from prospective tenants.

A Platform study recently revealed that a fifth of its recent buy-to-let business has come from accidental landlords – where homeowners choose to rent their existing property instead of selling it when they are looking to move to a new home.
