Be Safe on Public Transport

Chances are, if you’re traveling to a city or large town, you’ll be taking a ride on some form of public transport. Buses, taxis and trains make getting around on your vacation cheap and easy. But public transport is not without its hazards – how can you keep safe and prevent a claim on your travel insurance?

Keep safe on trains by moving away from a person if they are too close to you, in the train corridor or on the platform. If you’re traveling by night train, lock your compartment. If this isn’t possible, secure your locked luggage to the racks with a padlock and keep your valuables close to you.

Hotel Safety for Travelers

Your vacation hotel can be your heaven but also your hell. Make sure you remember your accommodation for all the right reasons. While you can feel safe that you’re protected with international travel insurance, it’s far better to avoid any problems in the first place.

Use the hotel safe for valuables, not a locked suitcase or a pair of socks hidden under the bed. Use the lobby safe if your room doesn’t have one. Keep the door chain or door bolt locked whenever you’re inside.

Avoid ground-floor rooms. The best hotel room is one on the third to the fifth floor – you’re out of reach of street-level crime and can still be reached by fire truck ladders. Familiarize

Marjorie Deane internships

Applications are invited for The Economist‘s 2011 Marjorie Deane internships. Financed by the Marjorie Deane Financial Journalism Foundation, the awards are designed to provide work experience for a promising journalist or would-be journalist, who will spend three months at The Economist writing about economics and finance. Insurance leads: not all leads are created equal

It is important that you go into using insurance leads with realistic expectations. Some leads will turn out to be better than others, and depending on how you speak to your customers, you will have varying degrees of success.

Some things you should be aware of:

Ask for pertinent information. Sometimes a potential client might enter the wrong phone number or some incorrect data that affects the quote. If a client has entered fake information, you can get a refund for those leads.
