City analysts in agreement that new chief executive should sell Aviva’s general insurance arm and RSA tipped to benefit

The clamour for Aviva to sell its UK general insurance arm, estimated at £3.2bn by one analyst, was growing today amid hopes that the new chief executive will take decisive action and split the life and general insurance business.

The decision by chief executive Andrew Moss to step down, amid a shareholder revolt over executive pay, has led to the debate about the effectiveness of Aviva having a life and general insurance composite model being revived.

RSA tried to buy the general insurance arm in a £5bn bid in September 2010. The

At distracted driving forum, a focus on danger beyond ’2 seconds’

April 16th, 2012

Washington — At a gathering of his safety-minded peers, John Lee had a confession to make.

Last month, while driving to Madison, Wisconsin, Lee glanced down to review a playlist on his car’s MP3 player. He scrolled through the titles, looking for Bruce Springsteen songs, “wanting to avoid the Adele songs that my wife had put there.”

Then Lee looked up… and continued driving.

April 13th, 2012

Investigators suspect that the conflagration may have begun as a prescribed burn initiated last week. Experts believe that the unexpectedly strong winds and recent dry weather contributed to the creation of the wildfire, which covered nearly 5 square miles in a few hours.

UK rental market ‘remains stable’

April 8th, 2012

The recent LSL buy-to-let Index found that the monthly rent in England and Wales fell by 0.6 per cent in February, but one expert has said the market remains stable despite the findings.

Chris Norris, policy manager at the National Landlords Association (NLA), said that significant rent rises in recent times have been focused on London and the south-east.

“A lot of places around the country have experienced quite stable rent prices, or lack of rent changes shall we say, and some areas have been creeping down for some time,” he explained.

The expert added that it is too early to say rents have plateaued as demand is still strong and many rents appear to be increasing.

Mr Norris put the slight decrease in average rents down to a seasonal lull, as January, February and March tend to be “quite slow times for the rental market.

“It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if that wasn’t the national average across the rest of the year,” he concluded.
